Sibutramine is a centrally acting serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor originally developed as an antidepressant and later used as an anti-obesity agent for weight management. By inhibiting reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and to a lesser extent dopamine, it promotes satiety and reduces food intake while modestly increasing energy expenditure. It was withdrawn from markets in many countries due to increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in high-risk patients.
