Sodium chromate Cr-51 is a radioactive isotope of sodium chromate used for radiolabeling autologous red blood cells in nuclear medicine studies to measure red blood cell survival, volume, splenic sequestration, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Chromium-51 binds covalently to hemoglobin upon entering erythrocytes, providing stable radiolabeling for in vivo tracking with gamma camera imaging. It emits gamma rays suitable for external detection and has a physical half-life of approximately 27.7 days.
