Velaglucerase alfa is a recombinant human lysosomal enzyme (glucocerebrosidase) produced in plant cell culture that catalyzes the hydrolysis of glucocerebroside to glucose and ceramide, replacing the deficient enzyme in patients with type 1 Gaucher disease. Administered by intravenous infusion, it is taken up by macrophages via mannose receptors and reduces the pathological accumulation of glucocerebroside in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. Its plant cell expression system results in mannose-terminated N-glycans that enhance uptake efficiency.

آلية العمل

As a recombinant protein, it replicates the function of the naturally occurring human protein, supplementing or replacing deficient endogenous production to restore normal physiological activity.
