Nizatidine
Histamine H2 receptors on gastric parietal cells drive acid secretion, and nizatidine blocks them. Reducing acid output allows peptic ulceration to heal and relieves the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, particularly heartburn. The H2 antagonist class occupies an intermediate position between antacids, which neutralise acid already secreted, and proton pump inhibitors, which act on the terminal step of secretion; H2 blockade suppresses the histamine-driven component specifically. The compound is a small molecule with the formula C12H21N5O2S2 and a molecular weight of roughly 331.5 g/mol. It is an approved agent that has completed the final phase of clinical development, and remains a recognised member of its therapeutic class.
An H2 blocker that reduces stomach acid production to help heal ulcers and relieve heartburn.
