Venetoclax
This targeted oral therapy works by blocking BCL-2, a protein that prevents cancer cells from dying, and is used to treat certain types of leukemia (particularly chronic lymphocytic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia) when combined with other medications. A potentially serious side effect called tumor lysis syndrome can occur at the start of treatment as cancer cells die rapidly, so the dose is gradually increased and patients require careful monitoring and hydration. It is a significant advance for blood cancers that overexpress BCL-2.
