A purified protein extracted from pooled human plasma used to augment deficient levels of alpha-1 antitrypsin in people with hereditary alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic condition that leads to progressive lung destruction resembling emphysema. Regular infusions help protect the lungs from neutrophil elastase, an enzyme that would otherwise break down lung tissue.
