A naturally occurring bile acid that dissolves cholesterol gallstones in patients who are poor surgical candidates, by reducing biliary cholesterol saturation. It is also approved for the treatment of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, a rare inborn error of bile acid synthesis. Treatment may take months to years and is effective only for radiolucent, cholesterol-rich stones.
