After subcutaneous injection, insulin glargine forms microprecipitates that dissolve slowly, releasing the hormone at a steady rate over roughly 24 hours. This long-acting analogue provides once-daily basal coverage in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. A recombinant protein sold as Lantus and the biosimilar Semglee, it binds the insulin receptor like endogenous insulin. Its relatively peakless profile helps maintain stable blood glucose and lowers the risk of nighttime hypoglycemia compared with older intermediate-acting insulins.

This long-acting insulin analogue forms microprecipitates under the skin after injection, releasing insulin slowly and consistently over approximately 24 hours. It is used to provide once-daily basal insulin coverage in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Its peakless action profile helps maintain steady blood glucose levels and reduces the risk of nighttime hypoglycemia.
