A ganglionic blocking agent formerly used to treat severe hypertension by blocking both sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia, causing vasodilation and a reduction in blood pressure. It is no longer in clinical use due to its unpredictable effects and the availability of safer antihypertensives.
