Ranelic acid is the parent acid component of strontium ranelate, a dual-mechanism osteoporosis treatment where strontium ions partially substitute for calcium in hydroxyapatite crystal while simultaneously stimulating bone formation and inhibiting bone resorption through interactions with the calcium-sensing receptor. Strontium ranelate (strontium plus ranelic acid) was used for the treatment of severe osteoporosis to reduce fracture risk.
