Sodium glycerophosphate is an organic phosphate salt used as a source of phosphorus and sodium in parenteral nutrition solutions, offering better compatibility with calcium-containing formulations than inorganic phosphate salts. It is slowly hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase to release inorganic phosphate, preventing precipitation with calcium in TPN admixtures. It is used to prevent hypophosphatemia in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition.
