Xenon Xe 133
Xenon-133 is a radioactive noble gas isotope that emits beta particles and gamma rays (81 keV), used as an inhaled diagnostic agent for pulmonary ventilation scintigraphy to assess regional lung function and detect ventilation-perfusion mismatches in pulmonary embolism and obstructive lung diseases. After inhalation, it distributes within the airways proportional to regional ventilation, allowing gamma camera detection of ventilation defects. It is also used in cerebral blood flow studies via inhalation or intravenous injection.
