The acetate salt form of histrelin, a GnRH agonist used as an annual subcutaneous implant for the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer and to halt early puberty in children with central precocious puberty. After an initial surge in hormone levels, it produces sustained suppression of testosterone or estrogen. This long-acting formulation eliminates the need for daily injections.
