This recombinant interferon is used to treat relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis by reducing the rate of relapse and slowing progression. It modifies immune system activity, decreasing the inflammatory attacks on the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibers. It is self-administered by subcutaneous injection every other day.
