Protokylol is a catecholamine-based sympathomimetic bronchodilator that activates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, causing relaxation and bronchodilation through adenylyl cyclase activation and increased intracellular cAMP. It was used for the management of bronchospasm in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease before being superseded by more selective and longer-acting beta-2 agonists.
