Streptokinase
Derived from streptococcal bacteria, this clot-dissolving enzyme breaks down fibrin, the protein mesh that holds blood clots together, and is used to treat heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, and acute stroke when administered quickly. Because it can cause significant bleeding and allergic reactions, it has been largely superseded by more targeted clot-busting drugs in many settings.
