Technetium Tc 99m albumin aggregated (99mTc-MAA) consists of radiolabeled macroaggregated human serum albumin particles that temporarily embolize pulmonary capillaries proportional to regional pulmonary blood flow when injected intravenously, enabling lung perfusion scintigraphy. It is the standard agent for pulmonary perfusion imaging in the evaluation of pulmonary embolism, typically combined with ventilation imaging (V/Q scan). It is also used for assessment of pulmonary shunting in hepatopulmonary syndrome and for pre-operative lung function estimation in non-small cell lung cancer.
