Viomycin is a cyclic peptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces species that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits and blocking translocation, with particular activity against mycobacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It was used as a second-line antituberculosis agent for drug-resistant TB before the development of modern combination regimens. Its nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity limit its clinical application.
