This targeted therapy blocks the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which is abnormally activated in most basal cell carcinomas, and is used to treat locally advanced or metastatic basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) that cannot be treated with surgery or radiation. It is taken as a daily oral capsule. It causes severe birth defects and is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy; severe muscle spasms and hair loss are also very common side effects.
