Sodium Phenylacetate
Sodium phenylacetate is a nitrogen-scavenging agent used in combination with sodium benzoate for the emergency treatment of acute hyperammonemia in patients with urea cycle disorders. Phenylacetate conjugates with glutamine (via phenylacetylglutamine) in the liver and kidney, enabling renal excretion of excess nitrogen that cannot be eliminated via the defective urea cycle. The combination product (Ammonul) is administered intravenously for acute hyperammonemic crisis.
