One of the earliest synthetic pain-relieving compounds, historically used in the late 19th century to treat fever and mild pain before safer alternatives became available. It was withdrawn from clinical use because it can be metabolized in the body to toxic compounds that damage red blood cells, causing a condition called methemoglobinemia. It has been replaced by safer analgesics such as acetaminophen and is no longer used therapeutically.
