Samarium Lexidronam Pentasodium
Samarium lexidronam pentasodium is a radiopharmaceutical complex of samarium-153 chelated with ethylenediaminetetramethylene phosphonate (EDTMP), used for pain palliation in patients with osteoblastic bone metastases from cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. The EDTMP phosphonate moiety preferentially localizes samarium-153 to areas of high bone turnover, where the beta emissions deliver local radiation to metastatic lesions. It provides significant pain relief in a substantial proportion of patients with skeletal metastases.
