Suxamethonium
Suxamethonium (succinylcholine) is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent that mimics acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction nicotinic receptors, causing initial fasciculations followed by sustained depolarization and flaccid skeletal muscle paralysis used for rapid sequence induction and tracheal intubation. Its rapid onset of action (30-60 seconds) and short duration (10-15 minutes due to plasma cholinesterase hydrolysis) make it uniquely suited for emergency airway management. It carries risks of hyperkalemic cardiac arrest in patients with denervation injuries, burns, or prolonged immobility.
