Parenteral administration is the reason the sodium salt of acetazolamide exists, supplying the same carbonic anhydrase inhibition when swallowing is not possible or when a faster onset is required. Situations calling for that route include acute glaucoma, raised intracranial pressure and selected states of fluid overload, all circumstances in which delay would matter. Sustained use carries the effects expected from the parent drug: urine output rises, and serum potassium may fall over a prolonged course.
