Potassium Nitrate
Potassium nitrate is an inorganic salt that can act as a nitrate donor, being metabolized to nitrite and subsequently to nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation of blood vessels through activation of soluble guanylate cyclase and smooth muscle relaxation. It has been used historically as an antihypertensive and antianginal agent, and topically in desensitizing toothpastes for dentinal hypersensitivity through occlusion of dentinal tubules.
