Pumactant (artificial lung expanding compound, ALEC) is a synthetic pulmonary surfactant composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and phosphatidylglycerol that reduces alveolar surface tension, prevents alveolar collapse during expiration, and improves lung compliance in premature neonates. It was used for the prevention and treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), though it has been largely superseded by natural surfactant preparations.
