Secnidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent with a longer half-life than metronidazole, approved for single-dose treatment of bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Its active nitroimidazole moiety is reduced intracellularly to cytotoxic intermediates that disrupt DNA integrity in anaerobic bacteria and parasites. Single-dose oral administration improves adherence compared to multi-day regimens.
