Sodium citrate is a citrate salt used as an alkalinizing agent, anticoagulant in blood collection, and pharmaceutical excipient with applications in urinary alkalinization for stone prevention, correction of metabolic acidosis, and as a bladder anticoagulant. In blood banking, it chelates calcium ions to prevent coagulation during blood collection and processing. Oral sodium citrate raises urinary pH to prevent and dissolve uric acid and cystine kidney stones.
