Sodium ferric gluconate complex is an intravenous iron preparation consisting of ferric iron chelated to gluconate in a sucrose solution, used to treat iron deficiency anemia in patients undergoing hemodialysis and as iron supplementation in heart failure and chronic kidney disease patients who cannot tolerate or absorb oral iron. The gluconate complex provides a stable, bioavailable form of iron that is gradually released for incorporation into hemoglobin and ferritin. It offers a lower risk of anaphylaxis compared to high-molecular-weight iron dextran.
