Sodium iodide is an inorganic iodide salt used for iodine supplementation, as an expectorant in respiratory preparations, and as a source of iodine for thyroid function. It is also used as a pharmaceutical excipient and as a precursor in the preparation of radioactive iodide compounds. The thyroid actively concentrates iodide for synthesis of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
