Sulfamethizole is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic with high urinary concentrations used specifically for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Its rapid renal excretion achieves high antibacterial concentrations in urine, making it particularly suited for lower urinary tract infections. Like all sulfonamides, it inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase to block folate synthesis.
