Tiopronin (alpha-mercaptopropionylglycine) is a free thiol compound that forms mixed disulfide bonds with cysteine in urine, producing a more soluble cysteine-tiopronin complex that prevents cystine stone formation in patients with cystinuria by reducing free urinary cystine concentration below its saturation threshold. It is also used for the treatment of Wilson's disease as a copper-chelating agent and as a disease-modifying agent in rheumatoid arthritis. Its thiol group provides the chemical reactivity underlying all its clinical applications.
