Triclosan is a chlorinated aromatic compound with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity that inhibits bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR, FabI), a key enzyme in bacterial fatty acid synthesis required for cell membrane integrity and growth. It is widely used in consumer products (toothpastes, surgical scrubs, antimicrobial soaps) and has been investigated for treatment of infectious diseases and potential antiproliferative effects in cancer cell lines. Regulatory restrictions have been placed on triclosan in rinse-off consumer products due to concerns about endocrine disruption, antimicrobial resistance selection, and lack of proven clinical benefit.
