Xenon Xe-129, Hyperpolarized
Hyperpolarized xenon-129 is a nuclear spin-polarized form of 129Xe gas used in MRI to provide high-resolution imaging of pulmonary airspaces, airways, and gas exchange based on its unique NMR properties, particularly its sensitivity to the microenvironment of red blood cells and lung tissue. Unlike conventional contrast agents, it enables non-radioactive MRI-based assessment of regional ventilation, diffusion, and gas transfer function in lung diseases including COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung disease. Its hyperpolarized state provides a several-thousand-fold enhancement in MRI signal.
