Xylose
Xylose (wood sugar) is a pentose monosaccharide used in the D-xylose absorption test to assess intestinal absorption function, where oral D-xylose is absorbed by the small intestine without requiring pancreatic digestion and excreted in urine, with reduced excretion indicating malabsorption syndromes. It is also used as a low-calorie sweetener in some pharmaceutical formulations and as a substrate in diagnostic tests for bacterial overgrowth. In COPD research, inhaled xylose aerosols have been studied for mucociliary clearance assessment.
