Abciximab
Platelet aggregation is prevented by abciximab, an injectable antibody fragment used to stop thrombus forming in coronary arteries. It is given during and after procedures that reopen blocked vessels, angioplasty and stent placement among them, where the aim is to keep the treated segment from re-occluding. The intensity of the antiplatelet effect is also its principal hazard: because the blood's capacity to clot is substantially reduced, bleeding complications require careful monitoring throughout and after administration. Using an antibody fragment rather than a whole immunoglobulin limits the circulating persistence of the molecule. The product is classified as an antibody agent developed through the final clinical phase.
