Liraglutide
Receptor agonism at GLP-1 gives liraglutide its dual application in type 2 diabetes and in obesity. Mimicking the natural incretin, it enhances insulin secretion, suppresses appetite and slows gastric emptying, so glycaemic control and weight reduction arise from a single mechanism acting at pancreatic and central sites. Investigation has extended to cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects beyond those established indications. Its elimination half-life of about 13 hours is intermediate between the native hormone, degraded within minutes, and the weekly analogues developed subsequently. The agent is a protein of formula C172H265N43O51 and roughly 3751 g/mol, classified within the alimentary tract and metabolism group.
A GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, and studied for cardiovascular and neuroprotective benefits. It mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone to stimulate insulin secretion, suppress appetite, and slow stomach emptying.
