Poractant alfa is a natural porcine-derived pulmonary surfactant extract containing phospholipids, neutral lipids, fatty acids, and surfactant-associated proteins B and C that reduces alveolar surface tension, preventing alveolar collapse during expiration. It is used for the prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature neonates by restoring or supplementing deficient surfactant.
