Technetium Tc 99m red blood cells are autologous erythrocytes radiolabeled in vivo or in vitro with technetium-99m, used for equilibrium radionuclide ventriculography (MUGA scan) to assess cardiac ejection fraction and wall motion abnormalities, and for scintigraphic detection of gastrointestinal bleeding by identifying sites of active hemorrhage within the vascular compartment. The prolonged intravascular retention of labeled red blood cells enables serial imaging over several hours. This is the gold-standard nuclear medicine technique for accurate and reproducible cardiac function assessment.
