This clot-busting (thrombolytic) medication is used in emergency treatment of heart attacks (myocardial infarction) to dissolve the blood clot blocking a coronary artery. It is given as a single intravenous injection and works by activating plasminogen to break down fibrin clots. It must be given as quickly as possible after a heart attack begins, and carries a risk of serious bleeding.
