Trifarotene is a fourth-generation retinoid that is highly selective for retinoic acid receptor gamma (RARγ), the predominant RAR subtype in the skin, normalizing keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation with improved tolerability compared to less selective retinoids. It is approved as a topical cream for the treatment of acne vulgaris on the face and trunk, and is being investigated for other dermatological conditions. Its receptor selectivity reduces systemic and local retinoid-associated adverse effects compared to tretinoin.
