Cefoxitin
A cephamycin antibiotic with strong anaerobic coverage, commonly used for intra-abdominal, pelvic, and mixed aerobic-anaerobic infections as well as surgical prophylaxis. It is highly resistant to beta-lactamases produced by anaerobic bacteria. Its coverage profile makes it particularly suited to procedures involving the bowel or female pelvic organs.

Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), preventing transpeptidation and cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. This weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to osmotic lysis and cell death.
