Hydroquinone
A topical skin-lightening agent used to treat hyperpigmentation conditions such as melasma, age spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is needed for melanin production in the skin. It has also been investigated for antioxidant and other biological properties in research contexts. Long-term or excessive use can paradoxically cause ochronosis, a darkening of the skin.
