Phenindione is an oral anticoagulant of the indanedione class that exerts its anticoagulant effect by inhibiting the vitamin K-dependent synthesis of clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X in the liver. It was used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders including atrial fibrillation and deep vein thrombosis, but has largely been replaced by warfarin and newer anticoagulants due to its higher incidence of serious adverse reactions.
