Piperonyl butoxide is a synergist compound that inhibits cytochrome P450 and other oxidative enzymes in insects, thereby preventing the metabolic detoxification of pyrethroid and other insecticide agents and markedly enhancing their insecticidal activity. It is widely used in combination with pyrethrins or permethrin in topical antiparasitic products for head lice, scabies, and malaria vector control.
