Rauwolfia serpentina is a botanical preparation derived from the snakeroot plant containing alkaloids including reserpine that deplete catecholamine neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin) from vesicular storage sites in both central and peripheral neurons, reducing sympathetic tone and blood pressure. It has been used traditionally and clinically for the treatment of hypertension and was one of the first effective antihypertensive agents available.
