Sodium ascorbate is the sodium salt of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), a water-soluble antioxidant and essential cofactor for collagen biosynthesis and numerous hydroxylase enzymes, used for vitamin C supplementation and as an antioxidant in pharmaceutical and food formulations. It is better tolerated than ascorbic acid in patients with gastric sensitivity. High-dose intravenous sodium ascorbate has been investigated as a pro-oxidant cancer therapy and for neuroprotection in Alzheimer's disease.
