Tyloxapol is a nonionic liquid polymer of the alkyl aryl polyether alcohol type that acts as a mucolytic and surfactant, reducing surface tension in respiratory secretions to facilitate mucociliary clearance. It is used as a respiratory adjunct to thin and mobilize viscous bronchial secretions in conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, and postoperative atelectasis. It has also been used as a pharmaceutical excipient to disperse poorly water-soluble substances.
