These are donor T cells genetically engineered to carry a built-in safety switch in the form of the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase gene, which makes the cells vulnerable to the antiviral drug ganciclovir if they need to be eliminated. This approach allows the therapeutic immune cells to be safely destroyed if they cause unacceptable side effects such as graft-versus-host disease after transplantation.
