Porfimer sodium is a photosensitizing agent used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) that, upon activation by red light at 630 nm, generates cytotoxic reactive oxygen species—primarily singlet oxygen—that damage cellular membranes, mitochondria, and DNA, causing tumor cell death and vascular damage within the tumor. It is approved for the palliative treatment of obstructing esophageal cancer, endobronchial non-small cell lung cancer, and ablation of high-grade dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus.
